Commissioners Adopt New Water and Electric Rates
At their February 23, 2012 monthly meeting the MSC Commissioners adopted new water and electric rates based on recomendations by their consultants, Utility Financial Services. The rates will tax affect with the new fiscal year which begins April 1, 2012.
The study performed by UFS began in October 2011 where they analysed the data provided by the MSC on the cost to serve electric and water. UFS made recomendations based on that data to fairly spread cost of service to the different customer classes.
UFS analysis showed that the cost of energy was decreasing based on projections by DEMEC (Delaware Municipal Electric Corporation). DEMEC secures energy for eight of the nine municipalities that own their own electric utility. UFS also determined that the MSC was not recovering the cost for production and distribution of water and that water rates should be increased.
For an average customer their overall utility bill should go down. Increases in water will be more than offset by decreases in electric. This may not be true for a customer who uses large amounts of water and very low amounts of electric.
